Sabarimala is getting polluting with plastic materials |

Sabarimala, one of the most important pilgrimages in the country, is facing a new threat. Sabarimala has become a hill of pollutants: | |
---|---|
It is reported that 35 million people visited Sabarimala last year. It is also found that every person who goes to Sabarimala leaves behind at least 250 grams of plastic. Last year alone, 8750 tonnes of plastic was deposited there, which includes water bottles, chocolate covers, use and throw raincoats, food covers etc. Plastic, which is a non-biodegradable, litters the environment. | |
The capacity of the incinerator in Sabarimala is very low compared to the quantity of the waste materials dumped. Moreover burning plastic pollute the immediate surroundings. | |
Most of the plastic materials contain food particles which may attract the animals. They ingest these food particles along with the plastic covers. Intake of this plastic ultimately kills the animals. Ingested plastic remains intact even after the death of these animals. Plastic wastes in Pampa River affect the free flow of water and can affect the water quality and aquatic life also. |
